What are the applications of graphite electrodes and graphite product materials

(1) The application of graphite electrodes in heat-resistant materials.

① Graphite electrodes are used in electric arc steelmaking furnaces. Electric furnace steelmaking is the process of using graphite electrodes to introduce electric current into the furnace. The strong current is discharged through a gas arc at the lower end of the electrode, and the heat generated by the arc is used for smelting. According to the capacity of the electric furnace, graphite electrodes with different diameters are used. To ensure continuous use of the graphite electrodes, they are connected by electrode threaded joints. Graphite electrodes for steelmaking account for approximately 70% -80% of the total amount of graphite electrodes used.

② Graphite electrodes are used in mineral electric furnaces. Mineral electric furnaces are mainly used for producing ferroalloys, pure silicon, yellow phosphorus, matte copper, and calcium carbide. Its characteristic is that the lower part of the conductive electrode is buried in the furnace material. Therefore, in addition to the heat generated by the arc between the electric plate and the furnace material, the resistance of the furnace material also generates heat when the current passes through the furnace material. Each ton of silicon requires 150kg of graphite electrodes, and each ton of yellow phosphorus requires approximately 40kg of graphite electrodes.

③ Graphite electrodes are used in resistance furnaces. The graphitization furnace used for producing graphite products, the melting furnace for melting glass, and the electric furnace used for producing SC are all resistance furnaces, and the resistors installed in the furnace are also the objects being heated. Usually, conductive graphite electrodes are inserted into the furnace head wall at the end of the furnace bed, so they are not connected to conductive metal electrodes. In addition, a large number of graphite electrode blanks are also used to process various crucibles, graphite vessels, hot press molds, and vacuum electric furnace heating elements, which are applied in the quartz glass industry. 10 tons of graphite electrode blanks are required for each production of 1 ton of electric fusion tubes; Each production of 1 ton of quartz brick consumes 100kg of electrode blank.

(2) The application of graphite products in mold processing.

In recent years, with the introduction of precision molds and high-efficiency molds (with shorter mold cycles), people’s requirements for mold production have become increasingly high. Due to the limitations of various conditions of copper electrodes, they can no longer meet the development requirements of the mold industry. Graphite, as an EDM electrode material, has been widely used in the mold industry due to its advantages of high machinability, light weight, fast forming, minimal expansion rate, low loss, and easy repair. It has become inevitable to replace copper electrodes.
